Charizard has been one of the most chased Pokémon in the card game since the very first set. Japanese sets have given it some of its best artwork. These are the Japanese sets on our shelf with a Charizard card near the top of the set list.

Which Charizard set should I open?

For the biggest single Charizard in the shop, Inferno X carries the gold Mega Charizard X ex as its Mega Ultra Rare. Collectors record an MUR in roughly one box in 50, so it is a long shot. Ruler of the Black Flame gives you three Charizard ex to hit at SAR, SR and UR, the most Charizard in any one set on this list. For artwork, the Special Art Rares in Shiny Treasure ex and VSTAR Universe are favourites with collectors.
Two newer releases add very different Charizard cards. Every 30th Celebration Box holds two gold border reprints of classic cards. The original Base Set Charizard (137/103) is one of the two most valuable of the 30. Start Deck 100 has a Mega Charizard Y ex Mega Ultra Rare, found only in a rare gold version of deck No. 001.
How rare is a Charizard SAR?
Every set has several Special Art Rares. Collectors record one SAR in roughly every 3 to 6 boxes. The Charizard is only one of the SARs in its set, so the odds of that card in particular are a fraction of that. That long shot is exactly what makes pulling one feel so good. The pull rates guide covers the odds in more detail.
