Why do some sets cost more than others?

A set's price mostly follows two things, how much people want its top cards and how much sealed stock is still around. New sets tend to sell close to their usual price while stock is plentiful. Every box that gets opened takes one more out of circulation, so older sets with strong chase cards tend to cost more as time goes on.
High class sets cost more per box for a different reason. Each pack holds 10 cards and the sets are built around long runs of secret rares, so a box of 10 packs carries far more of the cards people want than its pack count suggests.
What's the cheapest way to open a Japanese set?

A pack bundle is the lowest cost way in. Our bundles are five sealed packs from one set, or three for some high class sets, so you can open a set without buying all thirty packs. A full box costs more but carries the box structure covered in the pull rates guide, which a handful of packs does not.
Is it cheaper to buy from Japan directly?
Buying from Japan yourself means the Japanese shop's price plus international postage, GST on the way in and a wait of days or weeks. New releases are also rationed inside Japan, with lotteries and one per person limits. The guide to buying Japanese boxes in Australia goes through what importing involves.
