How many cards are in each Japanese Pokémon set?

The main set, the secret rares and the total for every set we stock, so you know what a complete set means before you start.

By Kai Chai · Updated

Shiny Treasure ex Japanese Pokémon special box

Every Japanese card carries a number such as 113/076. The second number is the size of the set's main run of cards. Anything numbered above it is a secret rare, which is where the Art Rares, Special Art Rares and gold cards live. The tables below give both halves for every set we stock, along with the total number of different cards in the set.

Mega Evolution era

Storm Emeralda Japanese Pokémon booster box

Standard Mega era sets have a main set of 63 to 83 cards with 29 to 37 secret rares on top. Mega Dream ex is much bigger at 250 cards, as high class sets usually are, with 57 secret rares.

Start Deck 100

Start Deck 100 works differently from a booster set. Its 100 decks share a list of 742 numbered cards, with special versions such as the Mega Charizard Y ex Mega Ultra Rare numbered above that up to 766/742.

What the numbers mean for collecting

Most collectors chasing a complete set aim for the main set first, since those cards turn up in every pack. The secret rares are spread far more thinly, so finishing every one of them usually means buying some as singles. Our pull rates guide shows how often the rarest cards turn up, while the top hits guide lists the three most valuable cards in each of these sets.
